Making Beeswax Candle Tips – Candles with the Kids

Creating candles from beeswax is a practical but exciting project for the younger ones to learn. With this project, the children may stay as far away as possible from stoves and melting wax.   There is no mess and the amount of items needed for making beeswax candles is just about nil.

• 8 inch by 16 inch sheets of beeswax
• Primed wick sliced for a one inch candle
• A small paring knife from your kitchen
• Flat open surface

2. Lay out your sheet of beeswax
3. Slice wick approximately 3/4 inches longer than wax sheet (allowing excess on both sides of candle)

Leaving available wick at each ends allows you the choice to decide which side of the candle you prefer as the top and which side the bottom.

Lay the wick on the sheet’s tip first, fold it over using approximately 1/8-inch of beeswax then begin rolling. This seam will enclose the wick securely.With the tips of your fingers, roll the wax around the wick in a straight and secure line while pushing both sides at the same time. This will be the only time at which you will place any hard pressure while you are making beeswax candle.

Another option would be flipping the wax then folding it down to form a seam—about 1/8 inches—with a counter corner or perhaps a cutting board. Either or – just make sure you obtain a perfect seam in the process.

The thickness of your candle is a critical factor when making your candle. To increase the candle’s thickness, use more beeswax. This is done by placing the extra sheet of wax edge to edge with the original & using your fingers to gently meld the pieces together. Rolling beeswax into a straight line can be tricky so make sure you only stop when it’s wrapped around itself completely.

When you get to the end, gently push the edges of the beeswax down with your thumbs.  Continue going along the whole length of the candle creating an invisible seam.

Determine which part would work well as top for your candle then slash half an inch off the wick above the beeswax. Do not forget to start from the bottom as you remove the rest of the wick.

Even if the children don’t understand the true pleasurable part, you do. So go ahead, ceremoniously light your glorious achievement, inhale the exotic perfume and enjoy this splendid moment! But for kids? Gee – they made their own candle!
